What is considered "outside" financial aid?
"Outside" aid includes any funding such as scholarships, grants, and benefits from sources other than:
- the UNC-CH Office of Scholarships and Student Aid,
- UNC-CH departments or UNC-CH affiliates, and
- the N.C. State Education Assistance Authority (NCSEAA).

The federal government requires that students receiving any outside financial assistance must report these resources to their college or university:
This requirement applies to all forms of outside financial aid, including any scholarship or grant monies paid directly to the student by an external provider.
Students attending UNC-CH are asked to report their outside awards on an annual basis (prior to the start of every academic year) to ensure that their financial aid record remains current and accurate.
If you need to report an outside aid award, please download, complete, and return the
Outside Scholarships and Resources Reporting Form to the Office of Scholarships and Student Aid.
Outside financial aid may affect your eligibility for other forms of need-based student aid awarded through UNC-CH:
Outside resources are a part of the formula (see below) used to calculate "Financial Need" (i.e., a student's eligibility for need-based aid).

| Outside aid providers and students receiving need-based funding through our office, please note the University's policy on making revisions to financial aid packages:
Since UNC-CH meets 100% of demonstrated "Need", we are sometimes required to revise financial awards when students receive external funding that impacts eligibility for other, previously awarded forms of aid. Federal and State regulations call for dollar-for-dollar adjustments when the sum of a student’s awards exceeds his/her remaining "Unmet Need". Our commitment to the success of our students (both before and after their graduation) is the guiding principal behind our policy of using outside resources to replace loans and work-study before replacing need-based scholarships or grants. Unless your outside awards amount to more than the sum of your loans and work-study, we will gladly incorporate the additional funding into your existing package without reducing your gift aid.

Guidelines for outside aid recipients:
- Unless your award is a College-Sponsored National Merit Scholarship, N.C. Teaching Fellows Scholarship, or an Americorps Education Award, please ensure that the program or organization administering your award receives a copy of the Letter & Instructions for Outside Aid Providers. These documents contain essential forms and important details about changes in outside aid processing at UNC.
- Ask your provider if any additional information or documentation is needed from you before they will send payment of your outside award. See below for some examples of commonly-requested items and where you can go to obtain them.
- Transcripts or Proof of Enrollment
- Academic Standing and Progress, Financial Aid Award, Financial Need Calculation, Cost of Attendance, or Student Account/Billing History
- Student Central -- gives you secure online access to these items and much more, making it your one-stop shop for most documentation requests made by outside aid providers
- Provider's form that must be completed by a Financial Aid Officer
- Office of Scholarships and Student Aid -- We can help you with this.
- Send the form (along with your PID) as an email attachment to outsidescholarships AT unc DOT edu, or
- Mail the form to the attention of the Outside Scholarships Coordinator at the address shown on the Contacts page of this website, or
- FAX it to (919) 962-2716
- Invoice from the University
- Outside Scholarships Coordinator -- If your provider requires an invoice from the University before sending payment, we must have their written authorization in order for us to bill them.
- Requests for invoicing can be emailed to
outsidescholarships AT unc DOT edu.
- Note that invoicing does not begin until two weeks after the start of classes each semester (i.e., the last day to add and drop courses for the term). This is done to ensure that students are in compliance with course-load requirements set forth by the providers.
- We ask that all payments be sent directly to the University Cashier (Office of Student Accounts) according to the format outlined in the Letter & Instructions for Outside Aid Providers. Checks should not be sent to the Office of Scholarships and Student Aid.
- Should your outside aid provider mail your scholarship check directly to you, please fill out the Outside Award Payment Submission Form on your provider's behalf and mail it or take it to the Cashier's Office along with the check for deposit into your student account.
- Ask your provider how your check will be made out. Will it be (a) made out to UNC, (b) issued in your name, or (c) made co-payable to both you and UNC. Please note that, if their answer is either b or c, you will need to endorse the check at the Cashier's Office before the funds can be applied to your student account.
